Ascend Via delle Rosine, turn left onto Via Avezzana, then immediately right onto Via Albussano. Cross Corso Matteotti and continue straight onto Via Buttigliera. After about 1 km, upon reaching the cemetery, continue on the left side of the cemetery wall along Via Pirandello, leading to a large parking area; here, turn left to reach the old Buttigliera road, then turn right – following the cycle path – to the roundabout, reached after approximately 1.8 km. Cross and continue on the left side of the asphalt road of Cascina Robbio (passing extensive animal enclosures), crossing Rio di Cesole and Rio Moano. Follow the asphalt as it veers right (ignoring the deviation towards Cascina Riviera), beside large enclosures, then turn right again after about 400 m, continuing straight until reaching SP121 Riva presso Chieri-Arignano near the hamlet of San Giovanni, about 4.2 km from Cascina Robbio. Cross the provincial road and the hamlet (via Don Bosco), walk for nearly 1 km, first reaching the birth house of San Domenico Savio, then at the intersection with SP32 Riva presso Chieri-Buttigliera d’Asti. With caution, cross to the opposite side of the road, travel about twenty meters to the left, and turn right onto a dirt road adjacent to the industrial area (former Embraco). Describing a wide arc to the left, reach a road lined with beautiful oak trees, passing on the right side of Cascina Martina, leading to an intersection after 1.5 km. Turn right, then continue straight on the inter-farm road, passing Cascine Corna and Serramena on the right, and further ahead, an asphalt road. A little beyond, enjoy a beautiful panoramic view to the left, ranging from the bell tower of Buttigliera to the Alpine chain, while on the left, a curious perspective of Colle Don Bosco. Ignore another right deviation leading to a farm, after over 3.5 km, reach Croce Grande locality in the Crivelle hamlet, where SP16 intersects. Cross the road, continue straight for 100 m, then turn right and follow the path descending through the meadows (view of Colle in the background). Disregard the first right turn to continue descending on the right at the next junction. Ignore subsequent left turns and arrive at a crossroads (about 2.4 km from the Croce Grande junction), near a bridge. Here, the route merges with that of Stage 3 of the Middle Path; refer to it for the final section’s description.

In the Footsteps of Don Bosco

San Domenico Savio and San Giovanni Bosco

Domenico Savio was born in a farmhouse in San Giovanni di Riva on April 2, 1842, to blacksmith Carlo and Brigida Gaiato, a dressmaker. The second of ten siblings, he was baptized on the same day of his birth at the parish church of Riva. Today, the entire complex has been transformed into a center for spirituality and hospitality, but the native house is still visitable: visitors can access the chapel created from the old kitchen space, a small museum replicating the father’s workshop, the room where Domenico was born with the original brick flooring, and the children’s room. The future saint lived in his birthplace until November 1843 when the Savio family moved to Morialdo, a hamlet of Castelnuovo d’Asti, where they stayed until February 1853 before relocating to Mondonio. On October 2, 1854, during the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, twelve-year-old Domenico met Don Bosco at the Becchi: it was a decisive step in his path towards sanctity, as Domenico asked to be admitted to the Oratory, expressing his desire to become a priest. The boy was then welcomed to Turin due to his exceptional spiritual and intellectual qualities under Don Bosco’s guidance. He stayed there until March 1857 when, due to severe illness, he had to return to Mondonio, where he passed away on March 9, 1857. His mortal remains rest in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin. On June 12, 1954, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope Pius XII in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome. His feast day is celebrated on May 6, and he is considered the “patron of expectant mothers.” A monument in his honor was erected near his birth house on the centenary of his death.

Map

Excursion to the Colle, to the birthplace of St. Dominic Savio and crossing the countryside between Chieri, Riva presso Chieri, and Buttigliera d’Asti.
